Vet before
you tender

A carrier that looks fine on the load board can be a revoked authority with a new name. You need the verdict before the rate con goes out, not after the claim comes in.

  • Pass/fail verdict against your own vetting rules, plus proprietary SearchCarriers risk factors
  • Source carriers with Advanced Search and export the list
  • Enriched contacts, and contact verification before you dial

Chameleon detection

New DOT.
Same people.

A carrier gets shut down and reappears under a new DOT number the following week. The name is new. The phone number, the yard address, the trailer VINs, and the email domain usually aren't.

We link every company in the database on shared identifiers and rate how strong each connection is — so the connection shows up on the profile instead of in a deposition.

Before I tender this load, is Meridian Freight LLC safe to use?

searchcarriers · search_companies searchcarriers · get_company_details

Meridian Freight LLC (DOT 3••••••) has active authority and insurance on file, but I'd hold off:

  • Its authority was granted 71 days ago.
  • An insurance cancellation is pending.
  • Its vehicle out-of-service rate is above the national average.

Want me to leave a note on it in your lineup?

Yes, and find me three alternatives in Ohio.

Questions

Straight answers

What is a chameleon carrier, and how do you detect one?

A chameleon carrier is an operation that shuts down under one DOT number and reappears under a new one to shed a safety record, an out-of-service order, or unpaid claims. We link every company in the database on shared identifiers like phone numbers, addresses, equipment, email, and more, and rate how strong each connection is. Connections show up directly on the company profile as associated entities.

What risk factors do you flag?

The signals that should stop a load on their own: an active out-of-service order, revoked or pending-revocation authority, missing or cancelling insurance, an authority listed for sale, and more. Each appears in plain language with the date it was detected.

How do you know an authority is for sale?

We monitor the groups and marketplaces where operating authorities are bought and sold. Listings are extracted, analyzed, and human-reviewed before anything is published. When a carrier appears in an approved listing, it lands on that company profile as a Company for sale risk factor — usually well before the name on the door changes.

How current is the data?

Authority and insurance are checked in real time with FMCSA's MOTUS system when you open a carrier, so a revocation or a pending cancellation shows up on the profile right away. Census, inspection, and safety data come in from the federal files the morning they publish, and for-sale listings are watched around the clock.

Do you support MOTUS?

Yes. MOTUS is FMCSA's modern replacement for the legacy L&I operating-authority system, and every carrier profile checks it in real time for authority, insurance, revocations, and BOC-3 filings. Carriers MOTUS does not cover yet keep their legacy record, so nothing goes missing.

Can I set my own vetting rules?

Yes. The rules engine covers authority status and age, out-of-service rates, safety rating, BASICs, fleet size, shared contact identifiers, and more. You set the thresholds and which rules block a carrier, and every company you open is scored against them automatically. Included on Compliance and Signals.

Can I claim my company's profile?

Yes. Carriers, brokers, and shippers can claim their profile, and it is free on any plan. Find your company by USDOT or MC number and we confirm you run it with a code sent to a contact on file with FMCSA. Your team can then add lanes, equipment, contacts, and a logo, comment on your inspections, reply to RoadRep reports, and share documents like your COI with the companies who request them.

Do insurers use SearchCarriers?

Yes. Underwriters use it for daily insurance filing and cancellation history, crash and inspection detail, and BASIC percentiles. On Signals, the insurance database lists every active and historical policy on file for an insurer, and insurance alerts tell you when a new carrier files with an insurer you track.

Is there an API?

Yes. A REST API exposes the same data as the web app — risk factors, vetting reports, BASIC percentiles, company watches with webhooks, exports, and the inspection and equipment databases — and looks up to 100 DOT numbers in one call. There is also an MCP server, so Claude and other AI agents can search and vet carriers directly.

Who can I search for?

Anything with a DOT number: motor carriers, freight brokers, and shippers. Search by company name, DOT number, MC number, phone, location, or equipment type — or snap a photo of a DOT number on a trailer and look it up that way.
